A Note from Jackdaw

Running an antique shop means handling an endless variety of objects. Some arrive with detailed histories attached, while others raise more questions than they answer. Over the years we've found ourselves researching makers, chasing obscure references and occasionally disappearing down unexpected rabbit holes simply to learn a little more about something that has passed through our hands.

This magazine section grew out of that curiosity. It's a place for collecting guides, unusual finds, bits of history and the occasional subject that simply caught our interest. Raku isn’t just pottery; it’s an alchemy of clay, fire, and philosophy. It was born in 16th-century Kyoto, when tea master Sen no Rikyū sought a vessel that embodied wabi-sabi—beauty in imperfection. Enter Chōjirō, a tile-maker tasked with crafting tea bowls that were simple, earthy, and hand-molded rather than wheel-thrown. The result?
